Nonstress Test

Why should I take the test?💡

A nonstress test is a common prenatal test that checks the baby's heart rate and responses to movements before birth. Just how the test is called, nothing is done to place stress on the baby during the test.

Your healthcare provider will recommend this test if you carry a multiple pregnancy with certain health complications such as diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure during pregnancy. If your due date passes for two weeks but your baby stays put, you should also check how your baby is doing.

A baby who is diagnosed with little fetal movements or possible fetal growth problems should be further monitored in this nonstress test. History of complications in previous pregnancy, Rh sensitization, low amniotic fluid are also red flags that you should consider taking the test to double check the baby.

How is the test done?💉

A nonstress test is often done in your healthcare provider's office. It does not require any special preparation. The test usually lasts for 20 minutes. If your baby is inactive or asleep, the test might take up to 40 minutes while waiting for the baby to be active to get the most accurate results .

During the nonstress test, you will lie on a reclining chair. You will have your blood pressure taken at regular intervals. A stretchy belt monitor will be placed around your belly to measure the fetal heart rate. Your doctor might try to stimulate the baby by placing a noise- making device around your abdomen, or having you drink or eat something.

TMI from Baby Billy👩‍⚕️:

Results of the nonstress test

Reactive

If your test happens before week 32 of pregnancy, reactive results mean your baby's heart rate reaches to a certain level above the baseline twice or more for at least 10 seconds each within a 20-minute window. The time increases to 15 seconds if you do the test at week 32 of pregnancy or later.

Nonreactive

A nonreactive baby is one who does not meet the criteria of a minimum number of movements mentioned above. Although a nonreactive result can make you anxious, it does not always mean something's wrong with the baby. The baby is probably asleep and inactive!

Your healthcare provider will likely do a few more prenatal tests to further check your baby's health. If the doctor concludes that the baby is under stress, further testing is necessary.

Risks of the procedure

Nonstress tests are noninvasive and completely safe for both you and your baby. While the test can reassure you about your baby's health, undergoing the test can make you worried or stressed. Keep in mind that the test is recommended when there's an increased risk of pregnancy loss. It is not always certain that the test is particularly helpful for you so consult with your doctor in case you need it.
