Why should I take the vaccine?💡

In order to complete the Hepatitis B vaccine and have adequate, long-term protection, you have to complete 3 shots in a series at the right times. The 2nd dose maintains the vaccine and develops antibodies for Hepatitis B.

How to get the vaccine?💉

Your baby should get the 2nd shot at 1 to 2 months of age. The clinic should have made you an appointment for the 2nd dose when you visited for the 1st shot. If they didn’t, do not hesitate to call and ask them for an appointment before the time passes

Any side effects?

Fortunately, babies usually tend to show no side effects after the shot, but if it happens to your baby, don’t worry because it will disappear quickly. The spot where you got the vaccine might swell up a few hours after the shot. Your baby might start whining, or lose his/her appetite. Rash on the skin and slight fever might appear as well, but it is rare. 

Tips before getting the shots?

The Hepatitis B vaccine is usually given to the thighs, so it’d be better to dress your baby in clothes that are easy to roll up. Having an appointment in the morning is recommended in order to observe and deal with possible side effects. Also, the baby cannot have a bath on the day of vaccination, so it is recommended to give a bath prior to the appointment.

When to delay or avoid the immunization

For the best result of the vaccine, it is important to take a shot at the appointed time. However, you might want to delay or even cancel the appointment depending on your baby’s condition. If your baby is sick with a simple cold or minor illness, it’d be better to take the vaccine later when she/he is okay.

Also, your baby might have had a serious allergic reaction after the first dose of the vaccine. In this case, you should discuss it with your doctor and decide whether your baby can continue taking the shot. Always call the doctor and ask for advice if you are not certain!
