The third dose of the vaccine will be given after 2 months of the first dose, which is usually when your baby is 4 months old. Your hospital will set an appointment for the 2nd dose at your visit for the first dose of the DTaP vaccine.

Any side effects from the vaccine?

Generally, the side effects of the DTaP vaccine are mild, but for some parents, the vaccine is infamous for rising fever in babies. The spot where the shot was given could get sore and swollen, so your baby might get fussy on the day of the shot. The side effect usually goes away within a few days, but if it lasts more than two days, you should visit the doctor and discuss it.

How does diphtheria spread?

Like other viruses, diphtheria spreads through the coughs and sneezes of an infected person. If a person doesn't receive any treatment for the virus, they can spread the bacteria for about 2 weeks after infection. Therefore, if you think your baby is showing some symptoms of diphtheria, you should discuss it with the doctor right away to prevent the virus to spread.
